Tamara Phillips accepts "Farms, Food, and Fun Geocache Adventure" prize

And the Winner is ... Avon Geocacher Wins Routes 5&20 Contest

The Route 5 and 20 Tourism Promotion Group has selected Tamara Phillips, a geocaching enthusiast; from Avon, N.Y. as the winner of their “Farms, Food and Fun Geocache Adventure” contest. Tamara was selected from over forty entrants who participated in the ‘Geocache Adventure’ and located at least five of the twenty caches or ‘treasure boxes’ hidden along the Routes 5 and 20 corridor from Skaneateles to Genesee County.

Ms. Phillips collected her prize worth over $520 at the Livingston County Chamber of Commerce and said, “ I live very close to Routes 5 & 20, but never knew there were so many great things to see and do along these routes until this summer while participating in the contest! I hope that this contest has introduced some people to my new favorite thing to do – geocaching. It’s a great way to get out, experience and enjoy the beautiful areas around you.”

The Routes 5 and 20 Tourism Promotion Group developed the “Farms, Food and Fun Geocache Adventure” to attract visitors to the historic roadway. The “Geocache Adventure” was a modern day treasure hunt, combining the tools of the high tech GPS (Global Positioning System) unit with a bit of old fashioned detective work. Twenty geocaches or “treasure boxes” were hidden at strategic points along Routes 5 and 20 and visitors and residents were challenged to locate at least five of the caches with the help of clues posted on www.routes5and20.com and www.geocaching.com . “Over and above the contest participants, we know 146 people visited the geocaching portion of our Routes 5 and 20 web site,” said Meg Vanek, Executive Director of the Cayuga County Office of Tourism. “ This was a unique way to reach out to a new audience and create interest and excitement in traveling through the charming communities along Routes 5 and 20,” she added.

The Routes 5 & 20 Tourism Promotion Group is a collaborative effort of the tourism promotion agencies of Cayuga, Seneca, Ontario, Livingston and Genesee Counties along with Skaneateles Area Chamber of Commerce.
